I wrote these lyrics for one of those kind of upbeat church service bands with drums, guitars, and such. It’s probably sacrilegious but I don’t mean it to be. I’m not a musician so I can’t complete the song, but I still can feel the melody and the beat inside as I read this. Maybe someone who knows their music and Bible can make it into something worthwhile.
I Am The Prodigal Son
(Upbeat, smooth) I am the prodigal son,
Yeah, I am the wasted one,
My brother done what’s right
I’ve been up so many nights,
Oh Papa take me back, I’m out here on my own.
(Kinda rap here) I’ve been quite prodigious, forgot about religious
Livin’ life capricious, the food’s been so delicious
Yeah Dad, I’ve been quite bad
But, I hope you have my pad
cause I was lost…..
(beat, beat, beat…) but now I’m found
(Smooth) For I am the prodigal son,
I’m not the logical one,
for Dad to save a place,
and then to give me grace
after all the very bad things that I done.
Yeah, after all the very bad things that I done.
(Kinda rap) I blew through all the dough, had some passions to outgrow
(Kinda rap) Starvin’ for affection, I’m needing your direction
Yeah Dad I’m hopin’ that you know
How much I love you so
Cause I was lost….
(beat, beat, beat)….but now I’m found.
(Smooth) For I am the prodigal son,
I am always scooting on the run,
Bro, I left you in the mire,
And now I feel your ire,
after all the very bad things that I done.
Yeah, after all the very bad things that I done.
(Kinda rap) Fatted calf was scrumptious, and I’m ready to be gumptious
Yo bro I know no fatted goat was cooked for you. (This’ll be a different kind of phrase this verse, ending high)
But I’ve hitchhiked here to stay
Here to help you if I may
cause I was lost…..
(beat, beat, beat…) but now I’m found
(Smooth) For I am the prodigal son, (but I’m back)
Comin’ back to join the family (This is a different kind of phrase for this verse, also ending high)
I’m here to ask forgiveness
For I’m certainly not sinless
after all the very bad things that I done.
Yeah, after all the very bad things that I done.
I’m here to ask forgiveness
For I’m certainly not sinless
after all the very bad things that I done.
Yeah, after all the very bad things that I done.
Thanks Dad, I love you. (Spoken)
…you too my brother.
